About the Role:

Naoero Medical Centre is seeking an experienced General Surgeon to provide specialist surgical care in the Republic of Nauru. You will assess and treat a wide range of surgical conditions, perform both open and laparoscopic procedures independently, and work closely with the clinical team to deliver safe, high-quality care to the community.

Responsibilities:

• Independently assess, diagnose, and manage patients requiring general surgical intervention.
• Perform open and laparoscopic general surgical procedures independently, within the scope of professional competence.
• Conduct preoperative evaluations, assess surgical risks, and obtain informed consent.
• Perform common laparoscopic procedures, such as laparoscopic appendectomy, cholecystectomy, and other appropriate minimally invasive procedures.
• Manage elective and emergency general surgical cases.
• Provide postoperative care, monitor recovery, and manage surgical complications.
• Recognize and promptly manage surgical emergencies, escalating or arranging referral when required.
• Work collaboratively with anaesthetists, operating theatre nurses, medical officers, and other healthcare professionals.
• Maintain accurate medical records, operative notes, and discharge summaries.
• Follow infection prevention protocols, patient safety standards, and established clinical guidelines.
• Participate in clinical audits, quality improvement initiatives, and continuing professional development.
• Support and guide junior medical staff when required.

Requirements:

• Recognized medical degree (MBBS or equivalent).
• Recognized postgraduate qualification in General Surgery, such as MS, MD, FRCS, or an equivalent accepted surgical qualification.
• Minimum 5+ years of relevant post-qualification experience in general surgery.
• Proven ability to independently perform common laparoscopic procedures.
• Strong experience in open general surgery and emergency surgical management.
• Demonstrated competence in preoperative assessment, postoperative management, and handling surgical complications.
• Valid professional registration and eligibility for medical licensure in Naoero, subject to the applicable regulatory requirements.
• Excellent clinical decision-making, communication, and teamwork skills.
• Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary healthcare environment.

Preferred Candidate Profile:

• Experience independently performing laparoscopic cholecystectomy and laparoscopic appendectomy.
• Experience managing emergency general surgery cases.
• Ability to assess surgical cases independently and determine when specialist referral is necessary.
• Experience working in a hospital or medical centre with operating theatre facilities.
• Willingness to relocate as single applicant without family
